WINTER HAVEN (Friday, July 10, 2009) — No one was injured when a fire on Friday, July 10, displaced five families from their homes.
The fire began in an apartment on the second floor of Winter Haven Manor, a high rise apartment building on Avenue A, SW, in downtown Winter Haven. The American Red Cross, just two blocks away, arrived and set up a feeding and hydration station for the firefighters and affected residents, using the parking lot of First Baptist Church, just north of the apartment building.
The fire displaced several families, destroying one apartment and making varying amounts of smoke and water damage in the other apartments. In all, the Red Cross helped seven families. In addition to temporary shelter and providing for other immediate emergency needs, Red Cross volunteers gave referrals to other United Way member agencies.
Other apartment complexes also called to offer vacancies to the displaced residents. By Monday, two of the residents had found apartments, two more had received help from family or insurance, and one had received an extended stay from the Red Cross.
Fires can be as devastating as any disaster, and as deadly. Please take every precaution and follow fire safety tips to prevent fires in your home, and please support your local Red Cross.
