Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 (4 p.m.) — When general population storm shelters open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, American Red Cross Polk County Chapter volunteers will do their best to keep people safe and to keep shelters sanitary and secure.
They also want to make sure everyone knows what they need to expect and bring, and what they should not expect or bring to any Red Cross-operated shelter. Please keep in mind that shelter space is always limited, especially during major disasters. Space per person is equal to the size of one twin-size bed. Smoking is not permitted inside a shelter, and law enforcement officers will be on hand to provide security.
Please DO expect:
- To share space with your neighbors
- No electricity, and probably no air-conditioning
- A safe and secure place to sleep
- Basic, simple food served at scheduled times
- Basic medical assistance
- Scheduled lights out for sleeping areas
Please DO NOT expect:
- Luxurious accommodations
- Total peace and quiet
- Your own room
- Your own cot
- Babysitting services or diapers
- Towels, linens or bedding
Please DO bring:
- Two blankets and a pillow for each person, along with lawn chairs, cots, or sleeping bags.
- Prescription medications and a first aid kit.
- Two or three changes of clothing per person.
- Special dietary needs, as well as any favorite non-perishable snacks
- Battery-operated (or hand-crank) radio, flashlights, and extra batteries
- (Copies of) important documents, such as ID, proof of residence, medical histories, insurance policies, account information, emergency contact information, tax documents, etc.
- Personal hygiene items, such as soap, towel, toothbrush, and other such items.
- Small toys, games, and books
- Baby supplies, such as diapers, bottles, and formula
Do NOT bring:
- Coolers
- Furniture
- Candles
- Alcoholic drinks
- Illegal drugs
- Weapons
- Pets other than service animals
- Items that require plug-in electric power
- Mattresses
Working together, we can make everyone’s stay in a shelter as comfortable as it can be, for as long as it must be during and after a disaster. Thanks for your cooperation. Prepare now, and Be Red Cross Ready.
